Niven Lake Trail, Yellowknife, N.W.T, Canada is a recreation trail located in the community of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. The 2 kilometre loop trail explores the shores of a small marsh-like lake in the heart of a Yellowknife residential neighbourhood.
The loop trail explores along a gravel and pebble trail with some sections hiking over flat rock (Canadian Shield). The trail is wide with lots of room in many areas. The high brush and trees hide many of the homes from view leaving an impression you are nowhere near the community.
There are viewpoints and viewing decks with sitting benches located along the trail with views of the lake. Some viewpoints include interpretive signs explaining the eco system and wildlife in the Niven Lake area. Some have been subject to abuse unfortunately.
The activities most enjoyed at Niven Lake include hiking, dog walking, jogging and birdwatching. The trail is a popular trail for the locals in the neighbourhood as many walk or jog the trail is part of their daily exercise routine.
There are opportunities for birdwatching and wildlife viewing at Niven Lake. On various occasions there have been sightings of beaver and muskrat on the lake. Look hard and you may find a beaver lodge on your Niven Lake adventure.
