Summit Lake & General Warden
The Laird Hot Springs is still fresh in our minds as we continue touring the Alaska Highway until we turn north and start our adventure into the Northwest Territories. The research adventure that keeps on ticking!
This section of the Alaska Highway between Watson Lake and Fort Nelson is our favorite section because of the amazing scenery consisting of mountains, lakes and raging rivers crisscrossing a curving highway spotted with wildlife.
The two big lakes on this section of the Alaska Highway are the Muncho and Summit Lakes. Both shoulder the highway and are easily viewed from the vehicle.
Summit Lake only has pull outs along the highway so to take in the views. There is also a campground on it called the Stone Mountain Provincial Park. From the pull-outs you cannot really get close to the lake. So we figured we would drive to the campground on our return trip from the Yukon so to get touchy-feely with the lake from the shore.
Little did we know the park warden ( referred to as the General Warden now ) met us at the campground gate and was not too keen on our unannounced visit to his guarded fortress which, by the way, is a public provincial park. At the gate we requested if we could take a quick look around and take pictures for our top tourism website www.BCeh.com .
You would think our logos on our vehicles and campers would be a hint we are there to help and promote his beautiful park. You would thick the word tourism would of sunk in.
Instead General Warden told us there was no parking and we could not park in a vacant site for a few moments so we could take pictures. However he said we could drive through if we did not leave our vehicles. I looked around, there were many empty spots. I tuned to him and said, shaking my head, “OK, what ever you say”, in as nice of a voice I could muster.
We entered the campground and at the boat launch we parked our vehicles (such Canadian rebels that we are) and got out of our vehicles and took some pictures and took in some sunshine. On leaving the campground the General followed us out to the gate – not sure because of curiosity or his protective attitude.
Across the campground is the Summit Trail trailhead and a pull out parking area. We immediately pulled in there with our campers so we could explore the trail. The General was still watching. Some people have too much time on their hands.
Here is a picture of Bro with a hard earned photo at Summit Lake.
