Burnaby Lake is a major recreational destination in the community of Burnaby, BC. The fresh water lake is the largest lake in the lower mainland.
The lake, trails, sports fields and green space easily make Burnaby Lake Regional Park a popular destination in the community for water sports, team sports and for many individual outdoor activities.
Burnaby Lake Regional Park is a full service year round, day use park with facilities and out buildings. The park includes day use picnic sites, a nature house, a rowing pavilion, a viewing tower, hiking trails, a canoe launch, an equestrian centre, washrooms and a playground.
Some of the activities enjoyed in the Burnaby Lake Regional Park include birdwatching, canoeing, hiking, picnicking, kayaking, rowing, tennis, horseback riding and dog walking.
There is a 10 kilometre walking trail in the park which circles around the lake. The pathway is generally in good shape, well maintained and follows a gravel trail and some boardwalk sections.
The path is easy-going and level and suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Along the pathway are some sightseeing benches, wooden bridges and lookout platforms. Dogs must be kept on leash when in the park. There are some shared trails with horses.
The lookout platforms are for birdwatching. The lake attracts many species of birds to the park. Some of the birds to keep an eye out for include bald eagles, great blue herons, loons, kingfishers and osprey. Birdwatching is best at the lookout near the Nature House and Piper's Spit.
