The promenade measures 3.1 hectares (7.6 acres). The promenade walkway on the waterfront following the banks of the Fraser River is the main feature connecting the promenade together.
The 2.6 kilometre (1.6 mi) promenade walkway provides exceptional views of the Fraser River, Golden Ears Mountains and Mt. Baker. One can watch tug boats, sailboats, fishing boats, yachts, kayaks, sea birds and many more sights and sounds on any given day from the promenade.
The Westminster Quay Waterfront Esplanade is very well maintained in a marine theme with many architectural extras like a lighthouse, sandy and rocky shoreline, tug boat, hanging marine baskets and a submarine.
Along the promenade are sightseeing benches, monuments, art structures and information signs explaining the history of New Westminster. The walkway is level, easy going and suited for all fitness levels. The walkway is very wheelchair friendly as well.
Most visitors come down to the waterfront to walk the promenade and to take in the sights. Some come to jog, roller blade, birdwatch or to push baby strollers. Almost all take some time to visit the market called the Westminster Quay.
Some of the other amenities located at the Westminster Quay Waterfront Esplanade include washrooms, playground, off leash god area, lookout towers, picnic day use areas, water fountain and totem poles.
When on the waterfront plan for some time to view the old 1899 Canadian Pacific Railway Station (Keg Restaurant), the Samson V Maritime Museum which is housed in the paddlewheeler moored in front of the market and say hi to the Simon Fraser statue in which the river was named after in 1808.
