A super fun lively place in the summer time when the water is much higher and skilled kayakers brave the widowmaker (class 3) along the Kananaskis River in the Bow Valley Provincial Park of Alberta. The winter is a wonderful time to wander around The Widowmaker area listening to the low flow trickle of the Kananaskis river and exploring the river bed. If you're someone who canoes or kayaks this area of the river or are interested in doing so, winter is a great time to scout the landscape and see where all the structure is along the river.
And did you know - 1500 tonnes of limestone rock, donated by Lafarge Canada, was placed in the river to create deep-water Class 2 to 3+ features, as well as used to construct a trail along the route between Widowmaker and Canoe Meadows race course!
The Widowmaker has a nice pool you can prepare yourself before you head down, in the summer this pool is full but still gives you a resting spot before the chute
