The traditional NL wood burning stove was one of my favourite luxuries at The Murphy Cottage vacation accommodation. In fact, the wood heat from the fireplace created a cozy cabin atmosphere while listening to the rain pouring down outside. There was plenty of firewood, fire starting supplies and detailed instructions for managing the fireplace. I absolutely loved curling up in the big comfy chair with hot coffee and a good book. The soft designer throw blanket by Hudson Bay Co. added a chic Canadian cottage feel and optimal coziness.

Free Firewood and A Wonderful Library of Local Newfoundland Books Were Thoughtful Ideas at NL Cottage
I especially enjoyed snuggling up by the fireplace and reading the award winning book “Food Culture Place” by Lori McCarthy and Marsha Tulk. Both ladies are foragers who practice making use of all the delicious natural delicacies that Newfoundland and Labrador has to offer. Inspired by recipes and photos I have foraged for Chanterelle mushrooms in the past and used them in my pasta dinner. In fact, the natural mushrooms are the most popular of wild edible mushrooms and bring a savoury woodsy taste with a velvety texture. I am really looking forward to berry picking and mushroom season on the island!
Things to do Near The Murphy Cottage in Brigus South NL Included Hiking on the East Coast Trail and Iceberg Hunting in the Nearby Town of Ferryland
There was no time to be bored during my waterfront cottage vacation rental in Newfoundland and Labrador Canada. In fact, the East Coast Trail hiking network is accessible via Brigus South. The trailhead for the Brigus Head Path Trail is accessible next to the community wharf in the small rural village. This leg of the coastal hiking trail is 6.4 km in length and rated moderate in difficulty. In the Summer months visiting finback, humpback and minke whales can be seen from the land circling Brigus bight. As a matter of fact, the large sea creatures use their net shaped bodies to trap capelin and other feeder fish. The cold waters of the North Atlantic Ocean are bountiful feeding grounds for whales, sharks and other forms of marine life.
Enjoy a Feed of Traditional Newfoundland Fish and Chips After a Hike on the East Coast Trail
A short drive down the NL Coast took me to the historic town of Ferryland where a large iceberg had been grounded for weeks. The ancient berg was a popular natural attraction with both locals and tourists alike. Uniquely, the icebergs float down the coast from Canadas Arctic or Greenland via “iceberg alley”. The glacial giants can be viewed along the coastline by both land and sea in season. After working up an appetite hiking I decided to stop into The Squid Jigger restaurant and pub near Cape Broyle. The food and drink establishment was the perfect spot to stop for a feed of traditional Newfoundland fish and chips while enjoying views of Capelin Bay. Don’t forget the dressing and gravy!!
Newfoundland Sunrise and Sunset on the Private Pond Side Dock Was a Memorable Experience at The Murphy Cottage in East Coast Canada
The most memorable moment of my nature getaway to The Murphy Cottage was the unbelievable sunrise and sunset over the pond. I had a campfire going outside in the fire pit and the wind died off just in time for the Newfoundland sunset to paint the sky in multiple shades of orange and yellow. In fact, I sat quietly on the private dock while listening to the coyotes howl in the distance and the many sounds of local birds such as loons. A cabin retreat would be the perfect destination for travellers with an interest in bird watching in NL.

I enjoyed the pond side sunset at the cottage so much that I set an alarm to ensure I didn’t sleep through the sunrise. It was well worth the early morning rise to sit on the dock and watch the sun peep up over the hills. The Southern Shore Island sunrise turned the sky an array of mystical colours. Thankfully, it was the perfect way to start the day and I was quite glad I hauled myself out of bed to experience such a beautiful tranquil moment. I found it remarkably peaceful watching the mist rise off of the water while listening to the many sounds of nature.
