Fort La Reine is a historic site and museum located east of Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, Canada. Throughout the Fort La Reine site are many heritage buildings complete with artifacts and exhibits depicting the First Nation, pioneer, military and agricultural history of the region.
The original fort dates back to 1738. A French explorer by the name of Pierre Gaultier de Varennes constructed the fort. Originally the fort was located on the banks of the Assiniboine River and, during its day, was the main fur trading post in the area for 15 years.
Fort La Reine today is an interpretive museum detailing the history of the region through its buildings and artifacts. There are over 25 heritage buildings and various machinery located on site in a village format.
The buildings range from schoolhouse to railway cars, from churches to aircraft. There are artifacts from the days of the First Nation people, pioneers, fur trappers, military and agricultural settlements.
The most notable artifact refers to an important time of growth in Canadian history. It is the 1882 railroad caboose which once belonged to William Van Horne - the builder of the Canadian Pacific Railway.
Other interesting buildings and artifacts on site include a 1931 Seagrave fire truck, Fire Hall, Officers Mess Hall, school house, 1880 West Prospect Church, Ukrainian Church, Signalman's Shack, Superintendent's Railcar #21, Musketeer Aircraft, York Boat, Trading Post, Threshermen's Caboose, Allis Chalmers Building, Hourie House, Burton House, Case House and Paul House.

How to Get Here: Travel to the community of Portage La Prairie, Manitoba. In the community travel the main street called Saskatchewan Avenue east leading out of town. Continue down the highway and at the corner of Lincoln Avenue the fort is on your left hand side.
