Coastal Chance Cove Hiking Trail

Hike Newfoundland, Canada Adventures

Catch some spectacular ocean views while hiking the Chance Cove Hiking Trail on the Isthmus Peninsula in Newfoundland

The Chance Cove Hiking Trail is a hidden gem of a trail that went relatively undiscovered until the pandemic. Located about 1 and a half hours from the capital city of St John's on the Isthmus Peninsula in the small rural town of Chance Cove. I actually grew up about a half hour away from this little gem and I did not know that it existed! I am a little embarrassed to admit that. They trail itself only takes a couple of hours from start to finish- depending on how many photos of the unforgettable views you take.

Take a spell at Chance Cove Hiking Trail - Newfoundland Labrador

Taking a spell in Newfoundland simply means taking a rest, and fortunately, the trail is designed to allow hikers to do just that. The trail boasts red benches strategically perched in spots with the most epic views! Notably, each bench is labeled with instructions to remind hikers to take a moment to rest and enjoy the view. This quirky feature of our province is truly adorable and showcases our unique character. In Newfoundland, we are known for our colorful language, and this saying is widely used throughout the province.

The awe-inspiring views along the trail will undoubtedly take your breath away. Moreover, the smell of the salt water is something that is difficult to describe adequately. Hiking the trail offers a unique opportunity to experience the roaring ocean waves, chirping birds, and the salty air all at once.

The trail itself is well maintained and with some recent upgrades. The trail can be muddy certrain times of the year so it is a good idea to wear waterproof footwear. Bring plenty of water to keep you hydrated too.

Two Stunning Beaches at the Very End of the Chance Cove Trail

The beaches at the end of the Chance Cove Hiking Trail are a must-see for anyone hiking this trail. Both beaches are rocky and require a bit of effort to access; however, the view from below is truly breathtaking. To access the beach, you must shimmy down a rope which may be intimidating to some, but taking your time is key. It's important to note that having proper footwear is essential, and if you have knee issues, it may not be the best idea.

Experience the Capelin Roll

Once you're on the beach, you'll be amazed by the small caves and little sea stacks. Spending the afternoon beachcombing, enjoying a boil up, or experiencing the capelin roll is a great way to enjoy your time here. In Newfoundland, we call a beach fire a boil up, and it typically consists of a cup of tea and a wiener roast. Moreover, the capelin roll on this beach is an event not to be missed. Capelin, a tiny fish that roll on the rocky beaches of Newfoundland in late June, bring whales close to shore as they feed on these little fishes. It's an exhilarating sight!

East Coast Newfoundland Hiking Gem

These rocky beaches are undoubtedly the treat at the end of the Chance Cove Hiking Trail, and as you hike, you anticipate the destination and the gorgeous view. All in all, the Chance Cove Hiking Trail was the hidden gem of the East Coast in Newfoundland. Undiscovered by most tourists in the province for years, it is now one of the most frequented by locals and tourists alike. For more on this hiking treat visit my blog at StaycationNL. We have hiked this one a few times!
