Chapleau Crown Game Preserve is a wildlife and bird sanctuary located near the village of Chapleau and east of the community of Wawa in Algoma Country, Ontario, Canada.
Within the boundaries of the wildlife preserve are the Pichogen River Provincial Park and a section of the Missinaibi Provincial Park. The Chapleau Crown Game Preserve is considered the largest wildlife preserve in the world!
The Northern Ontario preserve was founded in 1925 in an effort to protect the wildlife in the region from hunting and trapping. Prior to that, the preserve was once the home to the Ojibway and Cree First Nation People. Their stories are told by the many pictographs painted on rocks located throughout the wildlife preserve.
Chapleau Crown Game Preserve measures 7,000 square kilometres (2,700 sq. mi.) and includes many inland and remote lakes and waterway networks. There are many popular lakes and rivers for recreation like Lake Wabatongushi, Missinaibi Lake, Oba River, Albany River, Michipicoten River and the Missinaibi River.
Railways explore and mark the boundaries of the park. To the north are the tracks for the Canadian National Railway. To the south is the Canadian Pacific Railway. Marking the western border is the Algoma Central Railway. And to the east the park is protected by the Chapleau River.
The Chapleau Crown Game Preserve is part of the Canadian Shield. It is a rocky and forested eco system consisting of spruce, balsam fir, white birch, trembling aspen, jackpine, red and white pine trees. The forest cover and easy access to water is ideal for establishing wildlife breeding and feeding grounds.
There are reportedly over 120 wildlife species of birds and over 50 species of mammals protected in the preserve. Wildlife sightings include black bear, moose, red fox, lynx, marten, otter, mink, timber wolf, beaver and bird species like the loon, blue heron, sandhill crane, osprey, owl and bald eagle.
Adventures enjoyed in the preserve include hiking, boating, backcountry camping, canoeing, kayaking, wildlife viewing, birdwatching and fishing for walleye, trout and perch. Throughout the preserve there are viewing platforms, day use picnic sites, boat launches and canoe & kayak paddle routes.
The Missinaibi River is a historic paddle route once traveled by trappers and fur traders heading to James Bay to cash in on their furs. The Wabatongushi Lake-Michipicoten River and the Oba Lake-Albany River paddle routes are also popular and best accessed via boarding the Algoma Railway. Most long haul routes provide wilderness camping sites.
