Terry Fox Memorial Monument is a statue dedicated to the great Terry Fox in the community of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. Thunder Bay is part of the North of Superior region of Northern Ontario, Canada.
The memorial pays tribute to Terry Fox from Port Coquitlam, B.C. who attempted to run across Canada (5300 miles) with a prosthetic leg in an effort to increase awareness and to raise money for cancer.
The cross Canada fund raiser was aptly named the "Marathon of Hope."
The monument is a 9 ft high bronze statue mounted on a 45 ton granite base with amethyst.
Terry Fox ran 26 miles a day and had covered over 5 provinces when tragedy hit.
Not too far from the statue is where Terry Fox was forced to end his "Marathon of Hope" because his cancer had returned and eventually it took his life on June 28th, 1981.
The site of the memorial is mounted on a high bank hill overlooking Lake Superior. The site is a great location for enjoying wide ranging views and for honoring Terry Fox.
Every year, around the world, thousands of people participate in the Terry Fox Run in an effort to find a cure for cancer.
Located near the monument is an information centre and washrooms.
