Fossil Hill is an educational and sightseeing destination popular for hiking located on the western side of Manitoulin Island, Ontario, Canada near the Village of Manitowaning. The island of Manitoulin is part of Rainbow Country in Northeastern Ontario.
The Fossil Hill Trail is a 3 kilometre one-way, single track, hiking path exploring the many rocky outcrops of the Escarpment Biosphere Conservancy. The Escarpment Biosphere Conservancy was created so to protect the land and wildlife of the Niagara Escarpment.
The dirt and gravel trail leads to fossil finds which date back to the Ice Age. It is important to respect our Canadian history by not touching or removing fossils from their resting places.
The Fossil Hill Trail includes sections with elevation hiking. Much of the trail is exposed to the sun with very little tree cover. It is advised to wear a hat, sunglasses and sun screen. Enjoy!
