Fort Frances, Ontario is located on the banks of the Rainy River and on the shores of Rainy Lake in Sunset, Country, Northwest Ontario, Canada. Rainy Lake enjoys over 2,575 kilometres (1600 mi.) of shoreline and it is a year round watersport destination.
The community of Fort Frances is a Canada/USA border town, as well as, the main commercial centre and transportation hub servicing the area and the surrounding villages and towns of Emo, Devlin, Barwick, Sleeman and Rainy River. Across the river from Fort Frances, Ontario, Canada is the community of International Falls, Minnesota, United States of America. Connecting Fort Frances to the U.S.A is the International Bridge border crossing. Just down the road in Rainy River, Ontario is another border crossing connecting to Baudette, Minnesota.
In the early 1900s steam ships were a popular mode of transportation when traveling on the Rainy River and Rainy Lake. The first tourism tours began operations on the lake in and around 1915. Tourism is still, very much, a big part of the region.
