Pakwash Provincial Park

The Pakwash Provincial Park is a water sport and campground park located in Sunset Country in Northwest Ontario, Canada. The park is located just north of the community of Ear Falls and south of the community of Red Lake, Ontario.

The Pakwash Provincial Park measures 3,993 hectares and is resting on the shores of Pakwash Lake.

The park environment is a mixture of eco systems including such natural features as a sandy beach, beaver ponds, wetlands, marshes, bogs, swamps, boreal forests and cliffs made of silt and clay.The forested section of the park consists of groves of jack pine, spruce, birch and poplar trees.

The geography of the park dates back 10,000 years. Long ago the landscapes and waterways of the Northern Ontario region were formed by the retreat of the glacial ice during the ice age. The retreat of the ice left behind the park's lake, bogs and wetlands.

Pakwash Lake, during the summer season, is known for its warm and shallow waters which tends to attract many to the park for water sport activities. The lake itself measures over 9800 hectares so there is lots of room to play.

Pakwash Lake is popular for boating, canoeing, sailing, swimming and fishing for walleye, whitefish, smallmouth bass and northern pike. A fishing license is required.

On the shores of the lake is a beautiful 1.5 kilometre sandy beach popular for campers, kids and families. The beach is fronted by a day use picnic area, large grass lawns, playground and change area.

Other services in the park include a large playing field, lookout tower, boat ramp, park office, canoe rentals, sani-station, flush toilets, laundromat, fresh water taps and campground with serviced and unserviced sites.

The boat ramp is good for launching boats, sailboats, kayaks and canoes. Bring your canoe or rent one from the campground as there is a 223 kilometre paddle route exploring the waterways in the area which was once used by the First Nation people, miners and fur traders.

For adventurers who enjoy hiking there is a 5.1 kilometre nature trail in the park exploring beaver ponds, forests and a wetland marsh. It is a self guided interpretive trail documenting some of the local plant species.

A trail map, available from the park office, is an ideal way to explore the trail. The map describes various flora and fauna. Some of the plant species identified on the path include bunchberry, white spruce, labrador tea, fireweed, speckled alder, leatherleaf, black spruce, bog rosemary and balsam fir.

Whether on the lake, camping or hiking there are many opportunities for sightseeing wildlife. Some of the wildlife observed in the Pakwash Provincial Park include black bear, moose, wolf, fox, deer, lynx, mink, otter and marten. For birdwatchers there are bald eagles, blue herons, osprey, loon and much more.
