Ojibway Provincial Park

Ojibway Provincial Park is a popular recreation and adventure destination situated on the shores of Little Vermilion Lake which is located southwest of the community of Sioux Lookout, Sunset Country, Ontario, Canada.

The Ojibway Provincial Park measures over 2,630 hectares (6,499 acres) and is, largely considered a natural environment. The highlights of the park include a sandy beach, campground, hiking trails and a wide selection of water activities.

The park was once a feeding ground for the First Nation people of the region. The First Nation people would access the lake for fishing and would harvest rice from the wild rice fields located in the park.

Today, there is a campground in the park with serviced and non-serviced campsites. The park and campground provide services and amenities including a marina, boat launches, dock, boat houses, washrooms, showers, laundromat, canoe and kayak rentals, group camping, park store, fish cleaning station, playground, firewood station, trailer sani - dump and a day use picnic area with picnic tables and a picnic shelter (rental).

Some of the more popular water activities and adventures enjoyed on Little Vermilion Lake include swimming, canoeing, kayaking, boating, water skiing and fishing for smallmouth bass, walleye, muskie, perch and lake trout.

Launching a canoe from Little Vermilion Lake provides access to a selection of scenic paddle routes with wilderness camping opportunities. The canoe routes connect to lakes like Lac Saul and the Minnitaki Chain of Lakes.

Other activities popular in the Ojibway Park include hiking, camping, picnicking, wildlife watching and birdwatching. Some of the wildlife sightings in the park include moose, beaver, black bear and many bird species like bald eagles, kingfishers and great blue herons.

There are six hiking trails located in the park for sightseeing and exploring. The hiking routes combine for over 11 kilometres of trails. The trail routes explore rolling hills, lakeshore and forests.

Lakeshore Trail - 6 km return ( 3.7 mi.) - A moderate and sometimes challenging interpretive trail with postings detailing the geology surrounding the lake.

Ridge Bottom Trail - 2.8 km (1.7 mi.) - A somewhat easy-going interpretive trail with postings detailing the life of a forest floor including lichens, moss and fungi.

Boreal Walking Trail - 1.5 km (0.93 mi.) - A easy-going forested trail exploring a forest of jack pine, white birch and white and black spruce trees.

Terry Lake Trail - 1.5 km (0.93 mi.) - An easy-going hiking trail connecting to a lake where one can fish and enjoy some wildlife watching and birdwatching opportunities.

Little Walking Trail - 0.8 km (0.5 mi.) - An easy-going interpretive trail detailing postings about the wildlife, flora and fauna of a boreal forest.

Red Pine Walking Trail - 0.5 km (0.3 mi.) - An easy going trail with postings detailing the life cycle of a forest.

During the winter months, after the snow has fallen and the lake has frozen over, the park is a destination for cross country skiing and snowshoeing.
