A Cozy Family Holiday Vacation in Kanata, Canada

Discovering Kanata, Ontario: A Cozy Family Weekend Road Trip Adventure - Kanata, Ontario, a charming suburb of Canada's capital, Ottawa, is often considered a hidden gem for travellers seeking a mix of urban convenience and serene landscapes. In November, this destination was visited with my youngest daughter for a cozy three-night escape, creating memories filled with family bonding, comfort, and delicious dining. A stay at Hyatt Place Ottawa West provided the perfect base, with local flavours and scenic experiences rounding out the trip.

Upon arriving in Kanata late in the day, the first stop was Hyatt Place Ottawa West, a modern hotel designed for both relaxation and productivity. Additionally, conveniently located only minutes from the 417, it was chosen for its proximity to local attractions and its reputation for excellent service. Upon our arrival, we were surprised to see a canoe and lounge chairs right out front. Immediately we knew that this was the perfect hotel for our weekend adventures.

Our room, which was spacious and tastefully decorated, featured plush bedding and large windows that framed a view of the cityscape. My daughter loved the cozy corner sofa therefore it became a favourite spot for cuddling up with a tablet. The suitcases were quickly unpacked, and we were able to unwind with some Netflix, courtesy of the hotel's excellent complimentary Wi-Fi.

Ontario Hotel Breakfast, delicious and convenient

Discovering Kanata, Ontario: A Cozy Family Weekend Road Trip Adventure requires a complimentary breakfast provided by Hyatt Place West. The French toast strips were found to be a favourite of both mine and my daughter. There was fresh fruit, yogurt, hot eggs, warm breakfast potatoes and a variety of choices of muffins, breads, bagels and English muffins. Add to this bottomless coffee and fresh juices – we were impressed, stuffed and ready for our day! One neat feature was found in the elevator, signs that advised when the least amount of traffic could be expected during the breakfast hours! After a morning of exploring our thoughts turned to lunch, and plans were made to explore a Canadian brand that was both familiar and nostalgic.

Lunch at Lone Star Texas Grill

Lone Star Texas Grill, a renowned Canadian chain, was our first choice for lunch. Known for its Tex-Mex cuisine, the restaurant offered an energetic and family-friendly atmosphere. Upon arrival, the welcoming aroma of sizzling fajitas filled the air, instantly lifting spirits after the journey. The dining experience began with freshly made tortilla chips paired with a tangy salsa, served as a complimentary starter. We stayed within our comfort zone and garlic shrimp fajitas were ordered with extra rice, extra beans, and extra veggies. Everything arrived hot and fresh. Garlic shrimp fajitas are one of my favourite foods, and the shrimp served at this location was so good I had to share my thoughts with the chef – they were the best I'd ever had! The staff, attentive and cheerful, made the experience memorable by chatting with our family.

During our time discovering Kanata, Ontario, a visit to Walter Baker Park was planned, which offered an opportunity to explore Kanata's outdoor beauty. Situated just a short drive from the hotel, the park is well-known for its wide-open spaces, scenic trails, and family-friendly amenities.

Despite the chill in the November air, the ambience made the visit worthwhile. Fallen leaves, scattered in hues of gold and rust, crunched softly underfoot as the trails were explored. Ducks and geese were observed gliding on the pond's surface, while distant laughter from the playground reminded visitors of the community spirit Kanata fosters.

A view of the playground found children who eagerly climbed, slid, and swung to their hearts' content. Additionally, moments of quiet reflection were enjoyed on one of the park's benches, where the peaceful surroundings seemed to slow time. The trails were well maintained for walking, the generous parking lots provided ample parking, and the various structures and monuments provided interesting and varied areas to explore. The park's proximity to the hotel made it a convenient outing.

Therefore an opportunity was had to explore the community recreation complex located nearby. The Tony Graham Recreation Complex features two ice pads, a fitness centre, and event spaces, which are frequently utilized by the local community. Public skating sessions, fitness classes, and recreational hockey games are offered, enhancing the overall experience for park visitors. During colder months, a visit to the complex can be combined with outdoor activities at the park, allowing for a full day of entertainment.

Dinner at The Brew Table Kanata Ontario Canada

For dinner that evening, The Brew Table, located directly beside the hotel was chosen. A cozy restaurant offering a casual yet refined dining experience. Known for its craft beer selection and comfort food, it provided the perfect ambiance to wind down after an active day. Upon entering, the warm glow of Edison lights and the inviting hum of conversation immediately created a welcoming environment. Of course, a Local Flight was sampled to get a taste of five locally brewed beers. If I had to pick a favourite – I couldn't!

The menu offered a variety of choices, from hearty burgers to pasta and seafood dishes. A personal favorite, the fish tacos, was chosen, while the classic penne with meatballs was ordered by my daughter. The food, beautifully plated, was as satisfying as it was flavourful.

The service stood out as another highlight of the evening. Transitioning seamlessly from one course to the next, the experience concluded with chocolate peanut butter cheesecake for me and a chocolate brownie a la mode for my daughter. Both were the fitting end to a cozy family dinner.

Ottawa is a very under explored area that intrigues me. Mostly anything East of Peterborough is under explored for me. I need to get busy.
