Shawinigan Park is located in the Community of Shawnessy in SW Calgary and is a sprawling park with rolling hills and beautiful mature trees that fill the park along smooth paved pathways. The park winds through the community and the unusual shape makes it a wonderful place for a walk or jog and in the winter you can ice skate at the Shawnessy Outdoor Rink. There are 2 kid's playgrounds as well as 3 tennis courts and a Community Centre with an interesting past.
Located at Shawinigan Park, the Shawnessy Community Centre has an interesting past. It is the last usable barn within Calgary City limits. This unique vernacular-style barn was built in 1915 by homesteader John McInnes and it is impressive. Not only is it the Community Centre for the residents of Shawnessy but is a much sought-after wedding venue. The interior of the historic barn is perfect for weddings, family gatherings and birthdays with a warm wood interior. Interior photos to follow.
The Shawinigan Park has public tennis courts at 76 Shawglen Rise SW. There are 3 courts available and you can play both tennis or pickleball as these courts have been adapted for both sports. The courts in Shawinigan Park are open from May to October weather permitting. Everyone is asked to play for 30 minutes if anyone else is waiting to play. With the park's mature trees, these public courts provide both sun and shade for very enjoyable play. There are no evening lights at these tennis-pickleball courts.
