The main trailhead entrance is located near the parking lot of the Port Renfrew Recreation Centre and ball fields. The adventure begins at the beaver dams near the parking lot. Keep still and quiet and you just might spot a beaver poking its head out from under the dam.

The Port Renfrew hiking trail follows an old gravel access road most of the way. It is a deactivated road so no vehicle traffic. The road is surrounded  mostly cedar and hemlock trees. There are some peek-a-boo views of San Juan Bay and often on ecan hear songbirds in the trees.

The old gravel road was used by the forestry industry between 1926 to 1936 to transport lumber from the community to Botanical Beach. It was then John Quinn arrived in the region and opened up a shingle mill at the government wharf. The trail was named after him.
