The Wapiti Nordic Ski Club operate and maintain the Wapiti Trails located near the community of Grande Prairie, Alberta in Peace Country of Northern Alberta.
The Wapiti Trails are primarily used for cross country skiing during the winter months and hiking, jogging and mountain biking during the summer months.
In total there are over 35 kilometres of trails in the region. During the winter 4 kilometres of the xc ski runs are lit for night skiing. The trail network consists of many loop routes. Some exploring a forest of trees and others navigating the sand dunes above the Wapiti River leading to viewpoints and warming cabins.
During the cross country ski season visitors exploring the trails must have a ski pass obtained from the Wapiti Lodge which is located 1.5 kilometres south of the main entrance to the trails. The lodge also provides lessons, beverages and rentals.
The Wapiti Nordic Ski Club have erected a trail map in the main parking lot at the entrance of the trails. The Wapiti Trails are divided into two sections - the Forest Trails and the South Blue & Burgess Course.
The Forest Trails include such routes with names like Roller Coaster, Wapiti Summit, Surprise, Enchanted Forest, Caribou Alley, Bunny Hop, and Fox Run.
The South Blue & Burgess Course includes such trails with names like Ridge Run, Boot Loop, Camelback Hills, Cabin Trail, Wolf Trail and Little Antler Junction. There are two warming cabins called the Boy Scout and Shaw Cabins located in the area..
Travel to 100 Street in the community of Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada. From 100th Street travel south on Highway #40. At the 6 kilometre mark look for the Wapiti Trails sign. Take the exit and travel to the parking lot.
