The 883 km long T'Railway Trail follows the former CN rail line between Port-aux-Basques and St. John's Newfoundland Canada. This long-distance trail, which unusually is also a provincial park, is open for off-road vehicles (ATVs), hikers, cyclists, and horseback riders in summer, and for snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing in winter.

On the eastern part of the island, between St. John's and Grand Falls-Windsor, the trail weaves through Boreal forest, featuring wetlands, bogs, stands of spruce and fir, and many large rivers. Crossing the vast, open plains of the Topsails, near the center of province was a major highlight of our walk. West of Deer Lake the trail climbs through forested hills and mountains, featuring many lakes, lush green marshes, and long sandy beaches near Cheeseman Provincial Park. Along the entire length of the trail there are signs of its railway history. For example, there are both abandoned and restored railway cars and several railway museums along its length. In addition, anyone traveling its length will cross hundreds of trestle bridges and duck under numerous tunnels. The wild, remote landscapes that the T'Railway Trail crosses are an excellent place for bird and wildlife viewing, and for reconnecting with nature.

The T'Railway Trail is also part of the 28,000 km long Trans Canada Trail, which connects the Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic Oceans. As such, it was the first trail we explored during our 4-year #Hike4Birds across Canada from Newfoundland to British Columbia. It was one of the longest trails we hiked, and one of the wildest and most remote. As a result, it remains one of our favourite sections of the Trans Canada Trail.

Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or ATV driver or heading out on your first outdoor adventure, this trail offers a stunning journey through remote landscapes, making it an ideal choice for anyone looking for a spectacular wilderness experience that will create a deep and lasting connection with nature.
