We enjoyed the drive on scenic Hwy 6 to Little Current where Manitoulin Island begins.
Whitefish Falls is halfway between Hwy 17 & Little Current and is a great spot to stop for a lunch break. There are a few picnic tables at the turn-off but, if you go to the parking area closer to the Falls there is a table that is in the shade and has a nice view of the river.
It's a short, easy walk from the parking area to the Lower Falls. If you want more of a challenge, follow the arrows and climb the rocks to reach the top of the Falls.
The Little Current Swing Bridge opens on the hour during daylight hours in the spring, summer & fall to allow taller boats to pass through. It's located on the North Channel of Lake Huron and takes approx 15 mins.
Built in 1912 for trains only. In 1964, the bridge was modified to permit vehicles in addition to rail traffic.
Fun Fact: the traffic signals at the bridge are the only traffic signals on Manitoulin Island.
We were lucky to cross the bridge just before the hour. We stopped at 3 Cows & a Cone to get ice cream and walked back to watch the bridge swing open & close. Take the Waterfront Trail from the Manitoulin Tourist Information Centre. There is a good viewing spot just to the left of the bridge on the Little Current side. Unfortunately, we didn't see this until after so, this video is from the road on the right side.
Can you spot the sailboat passing through?
There are many beautiful places to explore on Manitoulin Island. We swam in Bridal Veil Falls before boarding the Chi-Cheemaun Ferry in South Baymouth which goes to Tobermory on the Bruce Peninsula. More pics & videos soon ...
There's so much to do there. Next trip!
