Whaling Shipwreck S.S. Charcot Scuba Diving Site in Conception Harbour Newfoundland Canada

By Cora Lee Rennie in Newfoundland 1113 views 18th Apr, 2023 Video Duration: N/A   Conception Harbour, NL A0A, Canada

Whaling Shipwreck S.S. Charcot scuba diving site in Conception Harbour Newfoundland Canada was a reminder of an old way of life on the island. The ship was built in Norway in 1923 for whale hunting on the North Atlantic Ocean. In 1970 during a storm the ship broke its moorings and ran aground. For many years it was believed by locals that this boat was another whaling ship the S.S. Sposa. However, when the "Shipwreck Preservation Society of NL" began doing underwater surveys of the ship they found it to be the S.S. Charcot.

An additional 3 wrecks are hidden below the waters surface at the site in Conception Harbour. Scuba diving is permitted at own risk but a speciality wreck penetration certification is required to dive inside the shipwrecks as they are extremely dangerous. The ship can be viewed while driving on the CBS highway (route 60) and there is a small parking area next to the wreckage. For more information on scuba diving please reach out to Ocean Quest NL.

For those not wishing to take up diving for various reasons there is another option: snorkeling! That's right, you can snorkel in Canada just like in the Bahamas! I have to wear a full on wet suit however - the North Atlantic Ocean is a little cooler than the Pacific. We do have icebergs and sea ice floating around. I’ve seen lobsters and scallops and so forth up close in their natural habitat and it’s very cool. I’ll be watching for your snorkelling adventures!   More ...

During the travel restrictions of the pandemic, an astrophysicist at our local university was disappointed that she and her husband were not able to snorkel the Great Barrier Reef in Australia as planned. They missed their tropical snorkeling get aways, and then looked out the window of their northern island home and thought -- well why not? They were shocked not only with respect to the cold water, but at the diversity of marine life they were able to see. So, they set out in their free time to find suitable gear--wetsuit and discover the most amazing snorkeling places around Vancouver Island and then wrote a book about it. I went to the book launch and now, have that book!   More ...
