There are so many famous waterfalls in Yoho National Park. Having seen a number of Yoho's falls before we were looking forward to discovering a new one that had been recommended to us. Although we didn't know the name of the falls, we were told that they were a short hike from the Trans Canada Highway. Checking the Parks Canada map, I found Wapta Falls located near the western edge of the park. The trail into the falls is rated as an easy 2.3km hike. Hoping these were the falls we had heard about we decided to check out Wapta Falls. In fact, at 107m wide these are the widest falls in the park. Wapta Falls are spectacular! They remind me of Niagara Falls in Ontario. Perhaps Wapta Falls is the Rocky Mountain version. Mark them on the list of must-see attractions in Yoho National Park BC Canada.

The Wapta Falls Trail is rated as an easy 4.6km round trip hike through an alpine forest. Adventure seekers will reach the top of the falls within 1.9km. To this point there the trail is flat. There are a few sections with large roots to watchout for and likely a few muddy sections as well. This section of the trail is friendly for the whole family. Dogs are also permitted as long as they are on leash.

Wapta Falls in Yoho National Park BC are grand. Framed by the Canadian Rocky Mountains, Wapta Falls are an impressive site to see. The shape of the falls and the power of the water pouring over the edge reminded me of Niagara Falls in Ontario.

However, if you have been out camping in the backcountry for a few days you will get a free shower. A cold, glacier water shower, but a shower none-the-less.

We were completely drenched after exploring Wapta Falls. Thankfully, it was a hot day, so we warmed up quickly. If I would have done a little bit more reading about Wapta Falls I may have suggested that we bring raincoats with us. Regardless, we had fun on our Wapta Falls adventure and will do it again. The trail is open year-round, so perhaps a winter visit is in store.

The hike back to the trailhead was pleasant and gave us a chance to dry off a bit. We passed numerous well-dressed people on our way out. They must have been wondering what happened to us since we looked like a couple of drowned rats. Fortunately, the parking lot at the start of the trail has picnic tables and toilets. They are pit toilets but are large and well kept giving us the opportunity to easily change into dry clothes before heading off to our next Yoho National Park adventure at the Natural Bridge.
