Mummering in Newfoundland and Labrador is one of my favourite holiday traditions during the twelve days of Christmas. Basically, Mummering is a tradition whereby individuals dress up in foolish disguises to hide their faces and body shape, using simple items from around the household such a pillowcases or underwear. The Mummers then go visiting homes in the community and the home owner attempts to correctly identify the mysterious mummer. There is drinking, music, food, dance and lots of fun and laughter. The Mummers then continue on to the next house and hopefully the new friends come along as well!
