The North Kootenay Pass

We took a trip to the Castle Provincial Parks in southern Alberta Canada, for a sidebyside ride up the North Kootenay Pass trail at the end of May. 

The trail became unsafe at about 8km with a fair amount of snow piles left on the trail in many areas. It just wasn't safe to proceed up the side of a mountain with the potential for a slip.

This is a gorgeous year round multi-use trail, with a total one way length of 9.3km, we almost completed the whole trail!

Some trail etiquette- If riding an OHV you must yield to all other users that are on foot, bike or horse. If a horse approaches, best to pull over and turn your machine off to let them pass safely. We saw absolutely no one else on this trail and had it all to ourselves.

The trail runs mainly through Castle Wildland Provincial Park, meaning backcountry camping and making a fire for lunch are acceptable practices in this section. In the Castle Provincial Park section, you must camp in the designated campgrounds and fires must be in the provided fit pits available.
