The bubbles are caused be decaying plant matter on the bottom of the lake. This releases methane bubbles which become trapped in the ice during the winter.

Those trapped bubbles look so neat! -
Lisa Muldoon they are really cool. The vertical stacking makes them look like a lava lamp or something out of a Dr. Seuss book.
