Root Cellars were traditionally used (and are still used) in rural NL Canada to store root vegetables such as carrots, potatoes, beets and turnips. The cellars use the natural cooling, humidifying and insulating properties of the ground to store food. Many old root cellars can be found scattered across the rugged landscape of Twillingate.
