The Bedeque Bay Important Bird Area, Prince Edward Island, Canada is a must-see location for birdwatchers, photographers, nature lovers, and families looking to explore the famous red sandy beaches of Anne of Green Gable's home province. It is located along the south shore of PEI between the Confederation Bridge and the Cape Egmont Lighthouse, encompassing Salutation Cove, the Dunk and Wilmot River estuaries, and the charming seaside town of Summerside. Interestingly, during spring and fall Bedeque Bay contains large numbers of staging Canada Geese, who are stopping to rest and refuel while migrating. In spring, Atlantic Brant can also be a common sight, so don't forget to bring your binoculars and spotting scopes! In addition, the marshy shorline, exposed mudflats, and sandy beaches of this IBA support a variety of shorebirds, including Black-bellied Plovers, Willets, and Red Knots, as well as gulls, waterfowl, raptors, and songbirds. The Bedeque Bay IBA is one of PEI's hidden birdwatching gems!

There are a number of access points for the Bedeque Bay IBA. One of our favourites is off Beach Rd in Borden-Carlton, because the beach offers fanatics views of the Confederation Bridge, and the stormwater drainage ponds and marsh trails provide excellent bird watching opportunities. During our visit in June we spotted an exciting mix of gulls, shorebirds, hawks, and songbirds.
