Camping in Newfoundland and Labrador Canada has always been a popular outdoor activity on the island. Whether it be in a tiny tent, pop-up camper, motor home or camper van - it has always made for a fun and magical experience. In fact, camper vans are beginning to become more popular in the Atlantic provinces as nomadic van-life living becomes more mainstream. This past weekend in September, myself and sister-in-law Kayla, took her 1988 antique Ford Econoline Camp wagon for a cruise around the Avalon Peninsula. The sun was shining bright and the wind speed was low, making for perfect excursion conditions.
We left from Paradise, NL, and headed towards Conception Bay South with no set destination in mind. We took the scenic route down the coast and admired the sailboats bobbing in the bay and swimmers in the ocean soaking up the dog days of Summer on “The Rock”. Summer and nice weather are both very short lived here in Newfoundland so islanders and tourists alike really like to make the most of it.
We stopped for a few a few quick photos at Chapels Cove Beach and decided to continue on in search of a more secluded and private beach.
We continued on enjoying the breathtaking rugged scenery and stumbled upon a random narrow road that appeared to lead to the sea. However, we were quite concerned about turning Eli the camper van around to get back up the hill if it was a dead end. We took are chances and landed on a peaceful secluded beach overlooking Conception Bay NL. In fact, the tucked away Cove offered clear views across to Bell Island. I wish I had of taken my binoculars! Add a pair to your Newfoundland and Labrador travel packing list of accessories.
After successfully parking the van near the beach we took the time to wander the nearby trails and footpaths. We came to a clearing in the woods and stumbled upon another secluded beach - this time with a seaside hammock! You see, here in NL Canada, our rugged island landscape offers some of the most spectacular landscapes in the world. We never tire of exploring new unseen and off the beaten path destinations. In conclusion, the evening was unforgettable with flat calm seas and the stars and moon bright in the sky over Conception Bay. We roasted hot dogs over a campfire on the beach in our travel Solostove while listening to the sounds of nature and the great outdoors! All in all a fun and successful girls camping trip!

This bright red mushroom instantly caught my eye and put me right in mind of the red and white spotted growth mushrooms on Super Mario Brothers! Haha! Any other 80s babies that loved Nintendo as much as me?

Is it even Summer in NL without a beach fire wiener roast? However, this beach campfire was aided by our new Solostove which has been a great addition to van life for the ladies. It makes fire starting much easier in windy conditions and no smoky smell (which I love - but don’t love it on my clothes when living in the van with a handful of outfits)! Haha!

Summer 2023 flew by in a breeze in NL Canada. Myself and my sister-in-law Kayla took a last minute excursion through Conception Bay South and around the coastline to the Avondale area. Adventures in “Eli” the antique econoline are always so much fun - just cruising through town in a big pink recliner cool as a cucumber haha!
The camper van made for a fun overnight adventure to a lovely secluded beach on the Avalon Peninsula. We were very pleased with the parking job and levelness of the van, which always makes for a more cozy and comfortable camping experience.

I loved spending a hot Summer day on the island relaxing on the beach and listening to the sounds of nature surrounding me. The sound of the tide rolling, the waves crashes off the rocks, the seagulls and the wind blowing through the trees. If you look very closely at this photo you can notice historic Bell Island in the distance.
What camping activities do you like to partake in when at the campsite? I LOVE washer toss and corn hole! However, during this tournament the sand “ate” one of the blue washers. We dug and dug and it was never to be seen again!
Kayla can’t resist a bit of rock climbing when the opportunity arises! We climbed to the top of this rock formation along the coastline to have a peep at what was around the point. We discovered another beautiful secluded and private beach.

I needed a mushroom identification book to take on the trails with me to help guide me. Can anyone identify this fungi?

The stainless steel portable fire pit has been quite useful in windy weather conditions, but we also enjoyed it on this beautiful calm night in NL as well. Sunsets by the sea are magical!
With the end of Summer nearing we really needed to get away to the ocean for some salty rest and relaxation. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I emerged through the bushes and seen a beach hammock!

Blueberry Season in NL typically arrives in late Summer. The best time to forage for delicious wild Newfoundland blueberries is late August - September. This year the berries were ripe at due time and we picked enough to get through the year. I like to flash freeze them, vacuum seal them and use them in recipes. Baking blueberry muffins is always my favourite.
Chapels Cove Beach was another beautiful seaside location to check out while road tripping around the Avalon Peninsula of NL Canada. Sadly, this beach was heavily damaged by the winter snowstorm “Snowmageddon” during January of 2020.
Camper van life was challenging for me this Summer to say the least. It was fun to let Kayla take over control of the driving so i could just sit back and enjoy the wild ride!

What better way than to end off Summer vacation than with a seaside cajoling trip with family. Us ladies throughly enjoyed the RV as the crisper Fall air is creeping in fast.

During a short hike in the forest I was surprised to spot this giant bright green caterpillar crawling slowly across the ground. I have never seen a caterpillar like this in real life before - have you?
