The Battery St. John’s Newfoundland Canada is located on the islands Avalon Peninsula and is best known for its colourful jellybean houses sitting precariously on the steep seaside cliffs near the entrance to the harbour. Vacation rental properties in this popular tourist destination offer the most spectacular location for viewing marine traffic in St. John’s harbour.
When visiting the Capital City, take the time to explore The Battery on foot and wander the exceptionally narrow cliffside streets full of historic NL homes and fishing sheds. Furthermore, venture up the lookout at Fort Waldegrave where you will be rewarded with panoramic views of the protected harbour and a large historic cannon used to protect St. John’s in days gone by. After working up an appetite exploring the hilly landscape, head downtown to The Bagel Cafe for a massive traditional NL breakfast feed including traditonal foods such as bologna, fish cakes, beans and the city’s biggest toutons! A touton is a Newfoundland delicacy which basically is fried white dough traditionally served with molasses. Located on Duckworth Street, the cafe is one of my favourite places for weekend brunch with my girlfriends and never disappoints - add it to your NL travel dining list. I can assure you won’t leave hungry!

Large supply vessels deliver goods to offshore oil rigs and the Canadian Coast Guard ships patrol the dangerous waters of the North Atlantic Ocean and respond to offshore emergencies. The Battery is a great location to watch marine traffic enter and exit through the narrows.

The Battery in St. John’s Newfoundland Canada is extra beautiful in Fall when the leaves turn colour and the dramatic dogberries pop on the trees lining the winding narrow roads. Also known as Showy Mountain Ash and American Mountain Ash, they are both native to Newfoundland. NL folklore suggests more dogberries mean islanders are in for a rough and cold Winter because more food is made available for birds.
Be sure to take the time to read the educational displays at Fort Waldegrave when visiting the St. John’s NL site. The plaques offer valuable historical information about early days on the island.
