Portage la Prairie is a small city in the Central Plains Region of Manitoba, Canada. I had the pleasure of enjoying the last days of autumn exploring the unique attractions Portage la Prairie offers to travelers.

I stayed in the Ox + Bow Air BNB: https://www.airbnb.ca/rooms/43431775?guests=1&adults=1&s=67&unique_share_id=ea2a8b14-caf5-450f-b13b-0bedb6a70fca

There are several unique attractions to make note of:

1) Canada's Largest Great Grey Owl
2) World's Largest Coca Cola Can
3) Long Plain First Nation's Eagle Statue
4) The National Historic Site of the Indian Residential School

The community sits on the Assiniboine River and offers wonderful opportunities to go hiking, participate in water activities, and do some local shopping.

The Eagle statue, created by Manitoba artist Jake Goertzen, was erected as a tribute to the survivors of the residential school system on the Long Plain First Nation's Keeshkeemaquah Reserve. The 12 foot tall eagle sits atop an 85 foot replica tree along the Yellowquill Trail. The eagle signifies, "the beginning of new days as the sun rises on today's fresh start."

The 85 foot tall structure in Portage la Prairie in Manitoba Canada has been identified as the world's largest Coca-Cola can. The tower was originally constructed as a water tower by Manitoba Iron Works Limited in Winnipeg in 1905. Locals do not seem to know why the choice to advertise Coca-Cola was made, there is some debate on if the design should be modified.

The former Portage la Prairie was designated as a national historic site in 2020.
"This is the oldest existing example in Manitoba of a system of boarding schools for Aboriginal children which was created across Canada between 1883-1960."
Built in 1914, the former residential school is located on Keeshkeemaquah Reserve.
The school was closed in 1975 and since then, the building and its surrounding lands were transferred to Long Plain First Nation.
It has been renamed as the Rufus Prince Building, to honor a survivor of the school system who served in the Second World War and later became chief of Long Plain First Nation and vice-president of the Manitoba Indian Brotherhood.
