Mitchell Lake Provincial Recreation Area is where you'll find a small trout pond called Mitchell Lake. Located west of Caroline, and south of Rocky Mountain House Alberta Canada. This small lake is a fun year round destination for families. There is a tiny day use area with firepits and picnic tables, pit vault toilets, as well as a few docks. Additionally, you'll find a small walk in tent campground (3 sites) open in the summer months. And during the winter, be sure to keep in mind that this is an aerated pond. The ice will be thin in many spots, even non existent. These aeration systems help keep the fish alive during the hot and cold weather fluctuations. Try your luck for some rainbow trout, tiger trout or brown trout!
A bit of information and a warning that there is a fountain system which leads to thin ice in many areas. Be safe and stay away from the centre of the lake.
There is a small lake side day use area at Mitchell Lake. Picnic tables and fire pits are available. You'll also find a tiny 3 spot tent campground here as well.
If you're fishing with young kids, be prepared to have a few back up plans in place. A container of winter bubbles, a Frisbee, ring toss, so many options to keep them busy.
Such a fantastic little fishing partner. She's always so much fun to head out ice fishing with. Take a break to make snow angels, then pop into the ice hut to warm up
When the fishing is slow, you move around. It's a bit hard to do with a little one but not impossible! We had the whole lake to ourselves and tried a few different areas.
Mitchell Lake is a stocked pond with Rainbow Trout, brown trout and tiger trout. My little one is putting her time in to catch her first fish through the ice.
I picked up a new tiny ice hut this year. As I am getting older, the massive amount of weight some of my gear adds up to, gets to be a lot. I thought for the days it's just me and little seeker heading out, which is majority, that we only needed...
I picked up a new tiny ice hut this year. As I am getting older, the massive amount of weight some of my gear adds up to, gets to be a lot. I thought for the days it's just me and little seeker heading out, which is majority, that we only needed a mini hut. I still have my other 2 bigger ones for my sleep over adventures, and times I have a few guests joining. I love this mini ice hut
This pond/lake is aerated. So the ice near the fountain is obviously quite thin. This particular lake has a nice safety fence wrapping around most of the soft spots in the centre.
