Slack Slough is a wonderful place to stretch during a road trip as it is right off the HWY near Gasoline Alley in Alberta. This wetland is considered a sensitive and important wildlife location. From spring to fall, you'll be able to enjoy many different kinds of birds who use this pond for various reasons. There used to be a viewing platform, but that was removed and this area is now unmaintained. There are a couple small trails in the grass you can wander to try to get closer to the water, but it becomes quite spongy and the cattails are tall. The future of this beautiful birding area is in question as development in the area encroaches. Lets hope this slough gets to remain untouched, as it really was teaming with birds compared to nearby similar water holes.
Teaming with birds, we spotted some ducks as well as geese and a few unidentified burds at Slack Slough. If you're lucky enough, you might even spot some tundra swans who are known to pop by seasonally.
If you can call them trails, this is where you enter from the parking lot. We found 2 paths that lead through the wetlands until the ground becomes too squishy.
It would be best to bring some binoculars or a spotting scope to Slack Slough as it's difficult to get close enough or high enough for optimal viewing conditions
The surrounding area is developing, and when that happens, these areas tend to become "less important". Which is unfortunate. I hope plans can be put forth to protect this area for the future.
